Heinrich Wieland Prize

Boehringer Ingelheim endows the
Heinrich Wieland Prize

The Heinrich Wieland Prize is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and awarded by a Board of Trustees.

The prize

In endowing the Heinrich Wieland Prize Boehringer Ingelheim demonstrates its commitment to promote research on lipids and related substances in the areas of chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and clinical medicine.

The first prize was given in 1964 to Prof. Dr Dr Ernst Klenk in honours of his lifetime achievements. In 2005, for the third time the "Medal in Gold" was presented for his lifetime achievements to Professor Dr Karl Decker from Germany. In autumn 2004, the prize celebrated its 40th anniversary.

The prize is named after Professor Heinrich Wieland (1877 - 1957), a Nobel Prize Laureate in chemistry in 1927 and leading lipid chemist during the first half of the 20th century.

It also reflects the special relationship with Professor Heinrich Wieland who was involved in the initial steps in Boehringer Ingelheim's pharmaceutical research.
